Uranium Affected Villages and the Myth of UCIL: Environment, Security and Rights-based Approach in Uranium Mining Regulations

Abstract

India aims to produce its own Uranium for its energy demands and rely lesson imports. Several issues have been raised in the recent months regardingthe ill-effects of uranium mining industry on the local residents,environment, and the overall economy of the region. There are serioussecurity implications that require transparency and deliberations. The mainaim of this blog post is to critically highlight these issues and place themwithin the wider debate of the needs of the nation as projected by theUranium Corporation of India and the Central Government. It further a briefly deliberates and analyses the regulatory framework and suggests theneed to make the law in line with the emergent situations and internationalpolicy framework.
