Authors: vahini, versha

Issue Date: Nov-2023
Publisher: Mind your Law
Abstract: One of the essential steps in planning and conducting research is to read, understand and analyze the already accumulated knowledge on the research topic or question. This applies to all kinds of research studies in all fields, including law. It is worthwhile to find out what other scholars and researchers have already done and learn from their studies before embarking upon your own. Clichés reinforce this advice: Do not waste time “reinventing the wheel” and remember to “do your homework” before beginning any research. It is important to understand the previous studies irrespective of whether you are a consumer or conductor of research. The significance of literature review finds its basis in the idea that knowledge creation is a collective effort. That we learn from others and further build on what has already been done. It also implies that knowledge accumulates and provides basis for identification of gaps and induce further research. Howsoever significant or famous a single study is, remember that it is only a fraction of the overall knowledge pool. Today’s studies are built upon those of yesterday and tomorrow will be on today’s. In this chapter, you would read about the following: (i) purposes of Literature Review; (ii) Characteristics of systematic literature review; (iii) Types of literature review; (iv) where to find the materials for literature review and (v) Steps of Literature Review. An attempt has been made to cite examples from law topics at as many places as possible.
