Abstract: During the fiscal year 2016-2017, the contribution of the agricultural and related sectors was 14% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), even though 58% of the population are dependent on the sectors for their livelihood. India has around 260 million people living in poverty and 80% of them live in the countryside. The median annual wage for a farmer in India is INR 18,850 (including the implied value of the food they consume). This is equivalent to two months’ minimum wage in Mumbai – the commercial capital of India. It is therefore unsurprising that there was a spike in farmer protests during 2017-18 in various parts of the country.
