Abstract: In the Western world, particularly in Europe, distinguishing between nationalities is often straightforward, primarily based on language identity. However, the complexity arises in India due to its diverse ethnicities, languages, and religions. While post-independence, the Indian government adopted a language-based approach to demarcate states, this was considered oversimplified and overly Westernized for a country as diverse as India. Similarly, the formation of Telangana as a separate state reflects this complexity, where the regional identity was separated from the broader national identity. The demand for statehood in Telangana stemmed from not only political neglect but also systematic exploitation, which manifested in various forms such as resource deprivation and discrimination in crucial sectors like employment, education, and industrialization. Thus, the creation of Telangana was pivotal for empowering its people to assert their political power, thereby safeguarding not just their economic interests but also their dignity, self-respect, and unique cultural identity. By striving for statehood, the Telangana movement aimed to address these systemic inequalities and contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goals such as Decent Work and Economic Growth by promoting fair employment practices, Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure through the development of regional industries and infrastructure projects, and Reduced Inequality by advocating for greater equity in resource distribution and access to opportunities.
