Abstract: The dynamic context of urban development in India is examined in this research paper, with particular attention paid to the vital role that urban development authorities play. The first part of the investigation looks at the development of UDAs historically, following their path from the early years following independence to the current era of smart cities and sustainable Urbanization. Examining the duties under the jurisdiction of UDAs provides an understanding of the legislative frameworks that influence how they operate. Case studies of cities such as Mumbai, Bengaluru, Jaipur, and others offer detailed knowledge of how UDAs deal with a variety of urban issues, such as the extreme demands of a mega city and the difficult balancing act between modernization and heritage preservation. The thorough examination addresses infrastructure development, urban planning programmes, and governance structures, illuminating the potential, difficulties, and opportunities faced by UDAs in practice. Challenges that have been identified include the need for simplified governance structures, bureaucratic hurdles, and coordination concerns. Strengthened public involvement, capacity building, and innovative urban planning are the main areas for progress. Looking towards the future, the research paper describes new developments, including collaborative governance models, smart cities, and sustainable urbanization. The prospects point to a change in urban development towards one that is equitable, inclusive, and technologically sophisticated, with UDAs taking the centre role.
