Abstract: Instagram, the image-centric social media platform, has permeated our lives, offering windows into curated realities, and fostering connection through visuals. But what drives us to scroll endlessly, tapping “like” on perfectly filtered moments? And at what point does engagement transition into dependence, blurring the lines between enjoyment and addiction? This paper delves into the complex interplay of motives and addiction within Instagram use. Drawing on psychological theories and empirical research, we investigate the diverse motivations that fuel our engagement. From seeking social connection and validation to self-expression and creative exploration, we unpack the psychological needs fulfilled by the platform. However, we also consider the darker side of the scroll, examining the factors that can lead to problematic use. FOMO (fear of missing out), social comparison, and dopamine-driven rewards, coupled with the platform’s design features, can create a perfect storm for addictive behaviours. Through quantitative and qualitative methods, we explore the prevalence and characteristics of Instagram addiction, examining its impact on mental health, well-being, and daily functioning. The paper identifies key risk factors and proposes strategies for mindful engagement, highlighting the importance of understanding underlying motivations while fostering healthy boundaries with the platform.
