Abstract: Sabarimala, a Hindu pilgrimage site nestled amidst the lush green hills of Kerala, India, is a powerful symbol of faith for millions. Every year, devotees undertake arduous journeys to reach the temple and seek blessings from Lord Ayyappa. However, Sabarimala has also become a battleground for a complex question: can religious tradition supersede the fundamental right to equality enshrined in India’s Constitution? The core of the controversy lies in the temple’s historical practice of barring women of menstruating age from entering its premises. This tradition is rooted in the belief that Lord Ayyappa is a celibate deity, and the presence of menstruating women would defile his sanctity. In 2018, the Supreme Court of India, in a landmark judgement, ruled that the exclusion of women was unconstitutional and violated their right to equality and freedom of religion. This verdict sparked widespread protests and violence across Kerala, highlighting the deep-seated beliefs and cultural anxieties surrounding the temple’s tradition. The Sabarimala debate remains far from settled. While the Supreme Court’s verdict stands, its implementation continues to face challenges. The complex interplay of faith, tradition, and constitutional rights demands a nuanced approach that respects both religious sentiments and fundamental human rights. Open dialogue, education, and a commitment to inclusivity are key to navigating this sensitive issue and finding a solution that upholds both faith and equality. Sabarimala’s story is not just about a single temple; it is a microcosm of India’s ongoing struggle to reconcile tradition with modernity, faith with equality. As the nation grapples with this complex question, the world watches with keen interest, for the outcome of this debate has far-reaching
