Abstract: The challenges that India’s secularism encountered between 1980 and 2000 are analysed in this paper, with a special focus on the emergence of Hindu nationalism and identity politics that resulted in the marginalisation of minority groups and a rise in intercommunal violence. These challenges have been made more difficult by the spread of fake news and the influence of social media. Despite these obstacles, institutions like the court and civil society organisations have stood up for secular ideas. A truly multicultural and democratic society in India must be developed while upholding the secularist principles.
