Abstract: The traditional fiber reinforced composites are vulnerable for thermo-mechanical loading, due to inter-laminar stresses at the interface becomes the weakest link of components. The development of Functionally Graded Materials (FGMs) mitigated the problems of de-lamination, de-bonding and residual stresses found in traditional composites at higher temperature. Thus, FGMs have a high prospective for high temperature applications. There have been many works already reported on FGM components, starting from manufacturing to stress analysis. However, only the limited work is performed on complex systems under dynamic conditions such as an FG rotor-disc system. In view of the potential use of components made of FGMs in wide variety of applications, it is important to understand the dynamic behavior of FGM shafts. This paper reviews the progress made till date on the dynamic analysis of shafts made of FGMs. Porosity in FGM is also inevitable factor during manufacturing. This paper also reviews the effect of porosity on dynamic response of FG structures and rotors. Thus, this paper provides a critical review of works reported in this area with an objective of providing the key challenges and future scopes of development in the direction of analysis.
