Abstract: In general context, a person can be arrested on reasonable suspicion of having to committed a criminal offence and held in custody until conclusion of the trial. Thus, it can be interpreted that the primary goal of the criminal law is to punish criminals. This chapter tries to comprehensively analyse the interplay of the applicable international conventions, constitutional provisions, national and state laws dealing with authority and procedure of preventive detention.
