Abstract: Gender and Sexual based violence (SGBV) have always been a part and parcel of war and armed conflicts. However, the forms and methods of committing the SGBV and their recognition has varied over the time. The development of the SGBV crimes has been marked with the development of international law in general and international criminal law specifically and has been greatly influenced by the feminist movement across the world.' Even so, the identification, recognition, and prosecution of SGBV crimes has taken decades to be formalized, the conviction on the charges of SGBV crimes remains bleak and problematic.
